movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

Do you give a flying rat's assfuck about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

Personally, I think it's still too soon after making everyone convert to DVD to introduce a new format. Especially if there are dueling formats. I have this crazy feeling that, though it's doing fairly well right now, this is going to come back and bite the studios on the ass. One format will win, then quickly go the way of DAT or minidiscs or UMD.

I ask because the only people I've noticed saying anything positive about the whole mess are the geeks who sit on their asses all day, in their parents' basements, watching their library of 1,000,000 DVDs because girls won't talk to them.

no, one format will win, and then Blu-Ray will go the way of minidiscs or UMD, or betamax for that matter - all of which (including Blu-Ray) were the sony proprietary format that was in competition with a dueling format. well, betamax was... the other were just shoddily marketed because sony never wants to share any patent information with manufacturers who could help them make a profit.

I also don't have HDTV so it doesn't matter to me (nor does anamorphic vs. letterbox).
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

I have an HDTV, but I think you get to a point where any difference is so negligible, normal human perception can't notice it.

Have you watched all three formats on it? I always see displays at Best Buy or wherever that have a screen shown supposedly in half DVD, half Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. It seems like they make the regular DVD look super shitty, so I doubt that's how it really looks.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

The whole point of HDTV is to make the picture look better on those ENORMOUS fucking TVs people buy nowadays (the 42" and 50" LCDs and Plasmas). Watching regular non-HD channels on those REALLY looks bad - the screens are too big making regular tv looks all grainy and pixelated. Regular PS2-or-older games suffer as well, and so do DVDs to a lesser extent.

I don't have a new TV yet, so the whole point of buying BluRay or a PS3 for me is non-existant. If you don't have a new TV, the rest is a moot point.

I really don't give a shit about either format.

I have no intention on buying either format until:
A) There is a clear winner.
B) I have an HD TV.
C) The prices drop.

And there is no way in hell I'll repurchase a few hundred DVDs. There might only be a handful I'd rebuy on the new format.

I don't care either.

I heard there is another format in development already that will surpass these.

I care because I'm a A/V, computer nerd. So format wars are great so that new technologies can be found. But for the consumer it can spell trouble.

Blue ray was talked about when I was first in highschool a long, long time ago. So its cool seeing it as it stands now. There used to be no reason not to have blue ray over HD-DVD but they stepped up and added more layers to catch up to its storage space, or nearly to it.

Technology is always changing and is getting cheaper, I dont own a HD-TV yet, not to say I dont want one... but there is already higher level displays being developed right now. Currenty the reining champ is 1080p (1920x1080) but the one that will come out years from now is...

"A Super Hi-Vision (SHV) picture is made up of 4,320 horizontal picture lines and 7,680 vertical lines. That’s four times the horizontal and vertical resolution of current HDTV"

Ultra HD.

commence more bitching.

I don't care either. There was a funny bit on the Daily Show a year or two ago about this- showing scenes from some stupid sit-com on "regular TV"..

I think it was Steve Carell and he was just talking all over it saying "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE" while it was clearly two people talking face to face...

He then went on about how "real life has 1500 scan lines" or some shit like that, funny stuff.

I suppose if I had cable or something I would care a bit more tho :mabs:
