What have you watched lately?

movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

Over the weekend, I saw:

Bohemian Rhapsody - I thought I would like it, but it was better than I expected.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - I have famously huge turds!

There was a third, but I already forgot what it was.

Netflix Documentaries "Iverson", about Allan Iverson - shocker, and "Iron Cowboy" about some guy who participated in 50 Iron Man endurance races in 50 states, in 50 days. Absurd but compelling, both of them. Also rewatched season one of True Detective which never gets old.

Police Academy. It was on TV and I haven't watched it in years. 6.7/10 on IMDB seems generous.

Rewatching an abbreviated phase 3: Civil War, Black Panther, Spider-Man (done) and tomorrow I'll get with Ragnarok & the 2 Avengers movies. So much great action obviously, but to me the most riveting few minutes of this - and possible the entire 22 movie saga - are from the time Michael Keaton answers the door to when he drops Pete off at the homecoming dance. Pure evil, and you can't look away.

Hobbs and Shaw. Big dumb fun action movie.

Friday Night Lights - finally saw the movie that led into the tv series I watched a few years. Same sappy football shit that made me teary-eyed back then made me teary-eyed again.

Hadn’t been to a movie in awhile, so we went to Ad Astra.
I was alternately laughing and getting angry at the inaccurate science throughout. And it just got more absurd as the film progressed. The plot was also mediocre.
It was cool to look at though.

Re-watched Highlander with my son. I still like it, and I'm usually opposed to any remake, but this is a perfect case of when a movie should be remade. The story is solid, though the execution is dated. The effects, sorry, suck. All the mountains of spinoff material blow and undermine the original. As much as I love Lambert and Connery, the acting is just okay, and it's tough to get over "Scottish character has a French accent and Spanish character is so fucking Scottish he bleeds haggis."

Sadly, the devotion to the shit spinoff garbage would result in this never being remade, even as every other fucking film ever made is.

But I'd cast Daniel Craig as Connor MacLeod (assuming he can pull off a Scottish accent, which seems a safe bet), maybe Vin Diesel as the Kurgan, and an actor who actually looks like he might be an ancient Egyptian pretending to be Spanish for decades (what does Antonio "I Faded Off the Face of the Earth" Banderas look like this century?).

And keep as much of the glorious Queen music as possible.

Sadly, they’d hire a bunch of 20-year olds to play everyone.

You know they would force some combination of Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Arnold if they could.

Dolemite is my Name. On Netflix. Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, and more tell the story of Rudy Ray Moore’s effort to get his blaxploitation flick, Dolemite, made. Good stuff.
I was not aware of how much Moore influenced an entire generation of rappers.

Watched Scorsese’s “The Irishman” on Netflix. It was good, but holy hell, it’s 3 1/2 hours long.

Also, watch the short companion piece afterwards of Scorsese, DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci having a conversation about working together on the film that was just as good. And Pesci is rockin’ that fumanchu stache.

Watched several movies over the past couple weeks. Had a few nit-picky items/

Austin Powers (all 3). They are still okay. But, not only does he recycle jokes between the Austin Powers movies, he uses jokes from his other movies like Wayne's World and So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: Indiana Jones doesn't know how properly use a transit. It is amazing that he actually found the right tomb.
Temple of Doom: I was reading about this one. People of India found it really offensive, so they had to film the movie Sri Lanka. Also, the explosion from when the plane crashes looks like the same special effects they used in ESB or ROTJ.
Last Crusade: There are a few things during the tank chase scene that violate the laws of physics.
